Kitty and Ogden Milton seem to have it all: an elegant apartment on the Upper East Side, two beautiful little boys, a love everyone envies.

In New York City, two strangers enter the Miltons' circle. One captures the attention of Kitty's daughter, while the other makes each of them question what the family stands for. All the secrecy, lies, and hidden emotions come boiling to the surface, and another tragedy happens. The book ends with the grandchildren trying to piece. The protagonist of the novel, sixteen-year-old Ree Dolly is the primary breadwinner for and caretaker of her family. Stubborn, resilient, and introspective, Ree is charged with the task of turning up her missing father Jessup, who some time ago put up as his bail bond the house and land where Ree, her mother Connie, and her younger brothers Sonny and Harold live.
